The paintings collection has many portraits in costumes from sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. Most of them were bought by Stibbert because of his interest in the costume or the armour portrayed. This was the only way to obtain images of very rare costumes and armours, owned by royal families and not available on the market.

Among the paintings there are several significant examples: a Madonna by Botticelli, two saints by Carlo Crivelli, two paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Younger,Medici portraits by Suttermans and one of Francesco I by Bronzino, two large biblical scenes by Luca Giordano, and many fifteenth century panels, etc.
